Termite Control Services
Termites are no pest to ignore as they cause billions of dollars worth of damage to structures throughout the country every year and the days of the long lasting chemical chordane are no longer with us. We began using Termidor, a new chemical to the market in 2000 and are having excellent success with our termite control services. The active ingredient in Termidor is Fipronil, a non-repellent so termites do not avoid coming in contact with the chemical. It is a slow killer which allows the termites that come in contact with it to carry it back to the nest and spread it to others before they die. For more information about Termidor and other termiticides visit this Virginia Tech Site: www.ext.vt.edu/pubs/entomology/444-500/444-500.html .
This year the label has changed allowing us to perform what is called a perimeter plus treatment. This allows us to treat a home with less drilling. The termidor is probably the most costly termiticide on the market which can affect the cost of the treatment. However, termidor can last up to ten years and can reduce the number of retreatments causing it to be more price efficient over the long run.

Moisture Control Inspections
Moisture control in the crawl area of the home can sometimes be a difficult problem to solve because it may be coming from several different sources. A moist crawl area may be the result of water penetrating through the foundation walls into the crawl area, a plumbing leak or due to the excess humidity of summer causing moisture to build up in the crawl during the summer months.
The first step is to determine the source of the moisture and then decide what actions will help control the moisture. There are a number of different options and the price of these control measures can range greatly depending on the actions recommended.
If you have been in the crawl area of your home during the summer and found condensation on the AC ducts dripping onto the vapor barrier, the floor insulation wet or seen a brown fuzzy growth on the exposed wood you may be in need taking some control measures. If you have seen any of these items you should have a pest control operator inspect the crawl area and take moisture readings of the substructural wood to determine the moisture content of the wood. All wood must have some moisture in the wood, however, if the moisture levels rise above acceptable levels a wood destroying organism (rot fungi) may grow on the wood and after some time of being active will cause deterioration to the wood.
Please call our office so we can talk with you and answer any questions you may have regarding moisture in your crawl space.
Annual Inspection Program
A number of years ago we saw a need that was not being filled by the pest control industry in our area. Many homeowners were concerned about termites and moisture but did not want to go through the expense of having their home treated unless there was a visible need. We developed an annual inspection plan, similar to taking your car to have the annual inspection done. We check for termites and other wood destroying insects, moisture and the general condition of the crawl area.
If you have any questions or if we can help with keeping your home checked please call our office.
